Dieter Koepplin (in Kat. Basel 1974) hielt die Tafeln noch als Kopien nach Cranach. Heydenreich (2007) betrachtet sie hingegen aufgrund stilistischer Merkmale als eigenhändige Werke Cranachs d. Ä. und sieht darin Cranachs früheste bekannte Darstellung des ersten Menschenpaares um 1508–10.

Die Weimarer Tafel ist bis in fast alle Details identisch mit der im nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg nach Moskau gelangten, bezeichneten und 1527 datierten motivgleichen Tafel ehem. in Gotha. Bereits Schuchardt erkannte ein Qualitätsgefälle und betrachtete die Weimarer Tafel als Kopie nach dem Exemplar in Gotha. Schuchardt und Flechsig (1900) betrachteten die Gothaer Tafel zunächst als Werk von Hans Cranach, später ordnete Schuchardt die Gothaer Tafel jedoch Lucas Cranach d. Ä. und die Kopie in Weimar Hans Cranach zu. Helga Hoffmann (1990) beschreibt die Weimarer Tafel als um 1530 oder später innerhalb oder außerhalb der Cranach-Werkstatt entstandene Kopie, Gunnar Heydenreich (in CDA, 2012) datiert die Tafel als Kopie nach Cranach in die Zeit um 1600 oder später.

Dieter Koepplin (in Kat. Basel 1974, Bd. 2) schreibt das Bild aufgrund des Abstands zu den sicher dem älteren Cranach zugeschriebenen Darstellungen des Sündenfalls wie z.B. Adam und Eva, Berlin, FR 162, versuchsweise Hans Cranach zu, schränkt aber auch sogleich ein, dass der direkte Vergleich mit den beiden von Hans Cranach signierten Werken nur ungefähre stilistische Übereinstimmungen erbringt.

Bezeichnet mit Schlangensignet und datiert. Im Restaurierungsbericht des Schleswig-Holsteinischen Landesmuseums aus dem Jahre 1968 wird die Datierung mit "1527" angegeben, im Ausstellungskatalog von Schloss Gottorf von 1997 ist dagegen von "1521" die Rede.

Ernst Buchner hat das Bild im Original gesehen und stuft es in einem Gutachten vom April 1961 als charakteristisches Werk Cranachs d. Ä. aus der Zeit um 1528–30 ein. Seiner Ansicht nach handelt es sich um das Fragment einer großen Adamsfigur, zu der einst eine korrespondierende Eva gehört hätte.
